Happy New Year

Up until very recently I could honestly say “I've never been in a fight and I've never been beaten up”. I can't make the latter half of that claim any more! In reality it was more of a tenderising than a beating but at the time I wasn't really thinking about technicalities of classification. I can make the first half of the claim still as all I managed to do while being dragged, punched and kicked across the bar was whimper like a girl and cover my head until the blows stopped landing. At which point I politely asked it I could retrieve the buttons that had flown from my dinner jacket and left the bar to find a tissue to mop my blood up with.

That probably sounds worse than it was and I have to state quite categorically it wasn’t entirely my fault and I wasn't actually hurt, its just the bouncers in Wanchai didn’t seem to understand the argument Mark was using as to why he wasn’t going to pay for the drinks he was too drunk to remember drinking!

The reason these new year greetings are being sent this late is that this year Christmas started early (Casino Royale in Black tie leading on to opening comments) and New Year ended late (Tuesday when I put Ben in a cab to the airport) so I’m in need of a quiet week or 50 now.

Just like travelling, Christmas with mates rather than family is different. I have to say here that Lis and Bev did a spectacular job in decorating the flat and Sean laboured over what was possibly the biggest turkey to ever walk the earth to produce feast so I couldn't ask for more, however when I'm with my family I usually go to bead before the boxing day walk.

We had a great day of feasting but the comedy highlight immediately preceded the walk at about 8am. As the last men standing, Sean, Mark and I decided it was a good idea to eat Lis and Travis’s decorative gingerbread house but were then comprehensively out smarted by Sonny (Sean's mutt). We tried to frame him for the illegal consumption using leftovers and a camera but ended in us clearing up spilt wine for the next 30 minutes or so, d'oh!

I have to admit nothing particularly different happened from previous years but as it was my first NYE to be spent in HK I'm pleased to say I did it properly. Mainly because we could celebrations started on the 30th. I like to think only true contenders go out the night before NYE but in reality its probably just idiots as we had one of the biggest nights of the year (so much so that Lis and Travis didn't recover in time for NYE itself).

And then there was the 31st and nibbles and drinks and cocktail sausages at Julie’s before hitting the town. I eventually got to sleep at 3pm on new years day which I’m personally rather impressed with, more impressed that is than my footie team when I turned up for our match that 6pm that night having only had 2 hours shut eye.

Though I hate to close on a negative, I have a complaint to make to secret santa. Getting a set of body lotions at work is one thing but when someone (supposedly one of my closest friends) bought me a book entitled "How to make anyone fall in love with you"…. I mean, come on, the evidence may not be incredibly strong in my abilities here but can't they just accept I'm having fun ….

And now its 2007 and soon to become the year of the pig. I’ll be heading back to the UK this year (for Lou’s wedding if not to stay) so will hopefully see most of you soon(ish) but until then.

Happy new year
